Module 1 – Assessment and DiagnosisThis first module sets the scene for all the subsequent modules and covers the aetiology of periodontal conditions, their diagnosis and assessment. The day also covers risk factors for periodontitis in depth and there is an introduction to the concept of assessing periodontal prognosis for individual teeth. Format:An initial presentation on periodontal diagnosis is followed by groupwork (working in groups of 3 or 4) on cases with diagnostic dilemmas or problems. There is then discussion on risk factors, illustrated by further groupwork and discussion on more complex cases. At some stage during the day there will be an interactive exercise on the assessment of prognosis for individual teeth. As with all our courses the programme is designed to be highly flexible; most of the day is spent in discussion and the topics covered will vary, depending on the direction of the discussion. Graham and Phil supply sufficient photographs and radiographs of cases they have treated for each group. A detailed workbook is provided for participants. Maximum number of participants: 20 Aims and Objectives:1. To appreciate the range of periodontal conditions that require treatment, and those that do not. 2. To understand the principal aetiological and risk factors involved in the development of periodontal diseases. 3. To understand the importance of screening and assessment for periodontal disease in general dental practice. 4. To understand the value and limitations of periodontal probing. 5. To appreciate the factors influencing the assessment of prognosis for individual teeth. The course should enable participants to:1. Diagnose periodontal diseases accurately and effectively. 2. Use BPE as a fast and effective screening tool. 3. Use periodontal probing more effectively. 4. Assess patients' level of risk for periodontitis accurately. Programme:
