Courses for Dental Hygienists and TherapistsOur program for Dental Hygienists and Therapists consists of 3 modules which are intended as a series, in sequence, although we have found that many people enjoy coming along for single days, invariably then whetting their appetites for more! Module 1 - Diagnosis and Treatment Planning An initial short presentation on periodontal diagnosis followed by groupwork (working in groups of 3 or 4) on cases with diagnostic dilemmas or problems. A second, slightly longer, presentation on treatment options is followed by groupwork and discussion on more complex cases. Graham and Phil supply sufficient photographs and radiographs of cases they have treated for each group. A detailed workbook is provided in advance for each participant on the day. Much of the day is spent in discussion and the topics covered vary, depending on the direction of the discussion. This day is highly relevant for hygienist/therapists, particularly if attending with their practice dentist(s). Module 2 - Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy An initial presentation on periodontal treatment options, including non-surgical treatment options and techniques, is followed by a discussion on indications for surgical therapy. The principles of surgical technique, and periodontal regeneration, are then outlined, using graphics and video. Module 3 - The Periodontal Appointment The day will focus on the key components of the periodontal appointment, including information gathering and patient motivation. There will be an opportunity to look at treatment options and strategies, as well as the indications for referral. |
