Module 6 - Surgery for the Non-Diseased Patient
Format:
An initial presentation on indications and techniques for pre-restorative surgery is followed by a practical session on pigs jaws, incorporating the surgical techniques learnt and practiced on Module 5. This is followed by an extensive presentation of treated human cases. The afternoon session is devoted to periodontal plastic surgery, combining the theory and practice (again on the pigs jaw) of grafting techniques, including free gingival grafts and connective tissue grafts.
We supply pigs jaws but usually not surgical equipment, which must be brought by each participant (see equipment list).

Aims and Objectives:
- To appreciate the indications and contraindications for surgical crown lengthening and other pre-restorative techniques.
- To understand the principles of periodontal plastic surgery.
- To understand the relevance of root coverage procedures.
- To understand the advantages and disadvantages of different root coverage techniques.
The course should enable participants to:
- Carry out simple crown lengthening procedures.
- Use pre-restorative surgery in complex restorative cases.
- Discuss the benefits of periodontal plastic surgery with patients.
- Carry out simple root coverage procedures.
