An Introduction to Dental Care

A Course for Carers of Patients with Special Needs

This half-day course, aimed at carers for anyone with special needs who do not have a dental background, will take a look at common dental problems and practical management issues. Particular emphasis will be placed on helping the carer to manage a client's / family member's own oral hygiene procedures.

Aims & Objectives:

  1. To understand the basics of dental disease (caries and periodontal disease) and how these are treated.
  2. To describe the periodontal implications for medically and physically compromised patients.
  3. To provide practical management hints and tips with regard to the client's own oral hygiene needs.

Programme:

Start: Introduction to dental disease
Presentation and interactive question and answer session.

Start + 40 minutes:
What are the implications for people with special needs? (presentation).

Start + 1 hour:
Practical oral hygiene procedures (presentation and practical demonstrations).
