Diagnosis and Treatment Planning in Periodontics (code: VDP) -
A Course for Vocational Dental Practitioners
Format for the day:
An initial short presentation on periodontal diagnosis followed by groupwork (working in groups of 3 or 4) on cases with diagnostic dilemmas or problems. A second, slightly longer, presentation on treatment options is followed by groupwork and discussion on more complex cases.
Graham and Phil supply sufficient photographs and radiographs of cases they have treated for each group. A detailed workbook is provided for participants. Most of the day is spent in discussion and the topics covered vary, depending on the direction of the discussion.
Aims and Objectives:
- To appreciate the range of periodontal conditions that require treatment, and those that do not.
- To understand the principal aetiological and risk factors involved in the development of periodontal diseases.
- To understand the importance of screening and assessment for periodontal disease in general dental practice.
- To appreciate the range of treatment options available for periodontal diseases.
- To understand when new treatment techniques, such as regeneration, can be used.
- To understand the relevance of antimicrobials in periodontal treatment.
- To be able to undertake long-term treatment planning in complex cases.
The course should enable participants to:
- Diagnose periodontal diseases accurately and effectively.
- Use BPE as a fast and effective screening tool.
- Select the correct treatment options in a variety of clinical situations.
- Plan in detail treatment approaches relevant to individual patients.
- Decide more easily when to treat and when to refer.
