Module 2 - Non-Surgical and Surgical Periodontal Therapy (code:GDP Mod 2)

Format for the day:

An initial presentation on periodontal treatment options, including non-surgical treatment options and techniques, is followed by a discussion on indications for surgical therapy. The principles of surgical technique, and periodontal regeneration, are then outlined, using graphics and video. The afternoon is entirely hands-on using pigs jaws.

Graham and Phil supply pigs jaws (one per participant but with spares available) but not surgical equipment, which must be brought by each participant. Handouts will be supplied.

Maximum participants: 12

Please note that the morning session is suitable for hygienists, who can attend with their dentists, and is similar to the Hygienist Module 2 Course.

Aims and Objectives:

  1. To appreciate the range of periodontal treatment options available and indications for each.
  2. To understand the objectives of non-surgical therapy and how this relates to current practice.
  3. To appreciate the scope and methods of plaque control.
  4. To understand the indications for, and limitations of, antimicrobial therapy.
  5. To understand the indications for, and limitations of, surgical therapy.
  6. To understand, and practice, basic surgical techniques and how these techniques can be applied to a variety of clinical situations.

The course should enable participants to:

  1. Choose an appropriate treatment approach for individual patients.
  2. Use antimicrobials in a rational and evidence-based way.
  3. Understand when periodontal surgery may be indicated.
  4. Treat patients surgically with confidence.
  5. Consider the use of regenerative materials.
