Module 1 - Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

This module can be run as a one day or two day course, the advantages of the latter being that more topics are covered, all are covered in greater depth and there is more opportunity for case discussion/groupwork.

Format for the courses:

Single Day (Code: GDP Mod 1): An initial presentation on periodontal diagnosis is followed by groupwork (working in groups of 3 or 4) on cases with diagnostic dilemmas or problems. Further groupwork and discussion on more complex cases is accompanied by a second presentation on treatment options. Please note that the programme is designed to be highly flexible!

Two Days (Code: GDP Mod 1A / 1B): The format is similar to the single day course but spread over 2 days allowing the inclusion of additional topics such as prognosis and non-surgical treatment techniques.

Graham and Phil supply sufficient photographs and radiographs of cases they have treated for each group. A detailed workbook is provided for participants.

Most of the day is spent in discussion and the topics covered vary, depending on the direction of the discussion.

Maximum number of participants: 20

Aims and Objectives:

  1. To appreciate the range of periodontal conditions that require treatment, and those that do not.
  2. To understand the principal aetiological and risk factors involved in the development of periodontal diseases.
  3. To understand the importance of screening and assessment for periodontal disease in general dental practice.
  4. To appreciate the range of treatment options available for periodontal diseases.
  5. To understand when new treatment techniques, such as regeneration, can be used.
  6. To understand the relevance of antimicrobials in periodontal treatment.
  7. To be able to undertake long-term treatment planning in complex cases.

The course should enable participants to:

  1. Diagnose periodontal diseases accurately and effectively.
  2. Use BPE as a fast and effective screening tool.
  3. Select the correct treatment options in a variety of clinical situations.
  4. Plan in detail treatment approaches relevant to individual patients.
